Caitlyn, or then Bruce, was a real champion on the tracks. She was fast and her perseverance was something that was impressing. She concentrated on decathlon discipline and continued to pursue an athletic career, after graduating from Graceland College with a degree in physical education.
After graduating from college, Caitlyn continued her decathlon practice and often worked night shifts so she could train at night and prepare for competitions. Her hard training and will to succeed got her into the Olympic Team in 1972.
Preparations for the Olympic Games were tough and Cait did everything she could to stay focused and to get into the best shape of her life. All the hard work and dedication finally paid off during the 1976 Olympic Games when Cait won a gold medal in decathlon.
After receiving a gold medal for something that was usually reserved for Soviet runners at that time, the U.S. people saw Cait as a national hero and someone to be proud of as a country. She returned to the United States and the media went wild for this talented athlete.
Caitlyn was then a man, and she hadn’t yet come out as transgender women, so for many women of that time, Bruce was a man of the year in every sense. She received many rewards and was, together with the rest of the Olympic team, a national pride.
With fame, came many endorsements and sponsorships for this, once struggling athlete. She landed deals with Minolta, Buster Brown Shoes and Tropicana. These were only some of the large brands that endorsed Caitlyn after her brilliant Olympic performance.
